friday fringe recap - Northwest Passage

I kind of felt at home watching this episode -- being from Washington State, and all. I grinned at Mr. BikeMan when I saw "Snoqualmie, Washington" on the GPS readout in Peter's rental car. Been there a million times. So did anyone else feel the Twin Peaks vibe? Pie and coffee in a small-Cascade-range town coffee shop, out-of-town FBI agent, cute waitress, body dumped by the river, tall evergreens swaying in the wind coming down from the Cascades peaks? And how about that soundtrack by Mike McCready of Pearl Jam? But what was with "Noyo County, Washington?" What in the world does THAT mean? Other than simply being fictitious, it must have some significance - inside joke? a hint?

I know there were lots of hints in this episode, but I was knitting and mostly listening to dialogue...I'll have to re-watch to catch Easter Eggs. I never saw The Observer last night. I bet he was at the crown in the diner, though.

Favorite (Walter) quotes (aren't the best ones always uttered by Walter?):

"Potassium bromate! This supermarket is trying to kill us!" - Walter, reading the label for toaster pastries (He must've just watched Food, Inc... LOL)

Walter: "What am I going to do? Call you every time I run out of pudding pops? ... I need to learn to care for myself. If Peter doesn't come back, they'll send me back to the hospital."
Olivia: "I won't let that happen."
Walter: "Thank you ... and I do need pudding pops."

I think I'm the only one who reads my blog who watches Fringe :(

1) Who was on the bridge? I guess Walternate

2) Who was being treated in the lab? I say it was either This-Side Mother or AlterMother (she needs a better name) because the hands were so feminine.

Poor, poor Walter. He was devastated. Peter was so mad. Was he mad at Olivia, too? For some reason, he doesn't suspect she knows...

fringe is back...woo hoo!

Anyone watch Fringe last night? It was totally awesome. The slyly retro 80's intro totally rocked, and sort of reminded me of Quantum Leap. Loved the balloon-fontish floating words :)

10 questions after viewing this episode:

1. Why is Peter so important?
2. Does Peter remember that This Side Walter is not his father? Hence, "Walter," not "Dad"?
3. Where is Peter's mom?
4. Are Alter Walter and Peter's Mom still alive? Searching? Wondering?
5. So, Nina knew all this time...not sure how to ask this question...it's too big.
6. Are the Observers keepers of a particular timeline, hence their involvement to save Peter?
7. Peter is extremely smart -- is this because of his Alter-Sidedness?
8. What was the sickness which Alter Peter suffered? Something natural or Pattern-related?
9. Did William Bell and Walter have a falling-out?
10. And most importantly, when is Olivia going to tell Peter!!!!????

i admit it -- i'm a Fringe fan

We don't have cable TV -- simply a digital antenna on our roof that pulls digital-broadcast shows from the major networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, 5 PBS stations) and a few independents. We are so happy with the decision we made to dump the cable last summer. Our viewing habits have completely changed... we don't just plop down and surf anymore. If we know there's something on we want to watch, we turn on the TV. If not, it is off.

But I have a few shows that I don't like to miss: House (I like good medical mysteries), Chuck (funny and quite innocent, but it's on against House, so I have to choose), Lost (mysterious, smart, they even sometimes speak Latin for goodness sake!), American Idol (I'm blushing), Masterpiece Classic (I love a good costume drama) and Fringe.

For those of you who know me, does it surprise you that I like Fringe? I recently heard it described as the frightening child of The X-Files and House, if TV shows could procreate. Good description. But what drives me to this show is the writers' apparent assumption that people are smart. It's not an easy show to follow. You have to pay attention. The relationships are complex. The humor (hilarious -- especially Walter Bishop's character) is sometimes very subtle. The acting is superb. The writing is excellent. You can play games like "find The Observer" each week and "find the hidden pictures (aka "glyphs"). The story develops over over months and even years, not in 52 minutes. It is also scary, sometimes gross (I often have to look away) and mind-bending.

I can hardly wait until April 1st. I even put a countdown widget on the bottom of the blog. I'm such a geek.
